Job Description

DESCRIPTION:  Permanent full-time position under the general supervision of the Park Ranger.  Primary responsibilities include the general maintenance, improvements, supervision, and management of Nelson Park and other natural resource areas as assigned.  The Park Technician helps with the upkeep and maintenance of equipment, buildings, roads, grounds, wildlife habitat improvements, tree planting and care, prairie management, and pesticide application.  The Park Technician must be able to operate a wide variety of equipment and have basic knowledge and skills in construction, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry.  Special duties include helping to oversee the operation the campgrounds, cabins, and shelter rentals.  This position is also responsible for providing park security, enforcing Conservation Board rules and regulations, and promoting good public relations.  The employee must be able to work with and supervise other staff and seasonal employees.  This position requires a non-standard work week, including evenings, weekends, and Holidays.  Requires some year-round, after hours emergency response and on call duties at Nelson Park, Yellow Smoke Park, and other areas as needed.  Other duties will be required as assigned by the Park Ranger or other supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:  A Bachelor’s or Associate degree from an accredited college or university, with major course work in park management, natural resources, outdoor recreation, or a related field is preferred.  Work experience in conservation, park management, or other fields may also be considered in addition to, or in place of, a college degree.  Applicant must have the ability to obtain and maintain an Iowa public pesticide applicators license (within 2 months of hire), possess a satisfactory driving record, and be able to become a certified Hunter Education Instructor.  Applicant may be required to get a CDL after hire.  May be required to obtain s-130/S190 controlled burning training and be able to get CPR/First Aide certified within 2 months of hire.  Must be able to pass background check, standard pre-employment physical, and drug screening.  The Crawford County Conservation Board is an equal opportunity employer. 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Requires full range of body motion, manual and finger dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and depth perception.  Requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing steps, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and operating a motor vehicle on a regular basis within any given work day.  Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 75 lbs.  (This position is classified as a Medium Work in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles).  There may be exposure to animals (such as rodents, insects, snakes, turtles, fish, etc.), domestic animals, and other adverse environmental conditions.  May require operation of a motor vehicle before, during, or after adverse weather conditions have occurred.

Starting salary range of $33,000 to $36,000 per year plus standard County benefits and insurance.  Open until filled, but resumes/applications will be accepted until at least 4:30 PM on June 13, 2021.  Resumes or standard County application may be dropped off, mailed, or emailed to the Conservation Headquarters.
